Danone is developing a portfolio of “manifesto brands” (see below) that promises to deliver a positive food future. The new One Planet, One Health positioning encourages consumers to make healthier choices and, more radically, aligns the company with sustainability and consumer “food sovereignty.” It’s ambitious, edgy, implicitly critical of “big food,” and it may peter out. But you have to like that CEO Emmanuel Faber explicitly links graphic design — branding, identity, packaging, corporate communications — to the success of the initiative. Which is what we all know: design is not about decoration but about crystallizing the essential truth of a thing. — Gordon Kaye
