How to Successfully Onboard Freelancers

Take Five

According to new research from The Creative Group, more than half of advertising and marketing executives surveyed said their company employs freelancers. And 39 percent of respondents report that the creative freelance talent pool has grown stronger. So how can employers help consultants acclimate quickly to their new work environment? Here are five tips to make project professionals feel welcomed and well-prepared to start contributing immediately.

  1. Keep staff informed. Give staff a heads-up that freelancers are being brought in and why – perhaps to help lighten their workload. Explain the role project professionals will play and how any responsibilities may shift.
  2. Provide a welcoming workspace. Prepare a comfortable work area with all of the materials and equipment freelancers will need to complete the project, including updated software and reference materials, like logins and style guides.
  3. Give a brief orientation. Take freelancers on an office tour, introducing them to team members and familiarizing them with the company. Assign a point person who can answer any questions or concerns the freelancer has.
  4. Clarify project details. Define the scope of the project, identify objectives and expectations, establish clear deadlines, and provide specific instructions. Put these guidelines in writing, if possible, so they can reference them again.
  5. Check in early and often. Touch base with freelancers to make sure both of you are satisfied with the work and can address any project challenges. Remember to give feedback and let them know you value their expertise.
