Is Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year — Classic Blue — a political provocation? Absolutely not, say Pantone officials: its selection is the opposite of divisive, a confident and calm “relaxed interaction” that is “dependable” and “non-aggressive.” According to VP Laurie Pressman: “Everybody is comfortable with blue. We know it. We like it.” Some contrarian color pundits (yes, that’s a thing) argue that a green hue should be the color of our Greta Thunberg moment. I have known the Pantone folks for 50 years and will bet on their expertise. — Gordon Kaye
