PUBLISHERS NOTE: SEARCH FOR A PRESIDENT

Do you ever wake up in the early hours of the morning and contemplate that, perhaps, neither of the presidential candidates are up to the job? I do. Almost every night. As several pundits have noted, we may well have a situation in which one candidate (John McCain) is too hot and the other (Barack Obama) is too cool. Enough politics from me, though, or the angry letters — “stick to design or shut up” — will start to flow. Again. So, staying within the world of design and marketing, here is an interesting tidbit. Senator Obama is showing clear leadership in at least one area: buying ads tied to debate-related search terms such as “debate winner” and “debate results,” and is snatching up ad inventory alongside searches for economic-related terms to capitalize on increased interest in Wall Street. According to a study by direct marketing specialist agency, SendTec, where Obama has acted, John McCain fears to tread. He has not purchase any search ads related to the debates or the meltdown. “McCain’s SEM campaign has taken a noticeable downturn and their camp is missing significant opportunities,” states the report. Both candidates are running clips and debate-related ads on their websites after the debates, and in terms of post-debate traffic, SendTec’s analysis shows that BarackObama.com draws a much larger share of total web users than does JohnMcCain.com.

Virgin’s Airphoria
Virgin Atlantic Airways Virgin Atlantic Airways’ new U.S. campaign — dubbed “Airphoria” — is based on the concept that flying Virgin Atlantic is always a great experience, regardless of the class. McKinney of Durham NC led the campaign, which runs through February and targets business travelers who may choose Upper Class or Premium economy services, as well as leisure travelers, who tend to ride Economy. The airline is making targeted ad buys to reach every audience. For instance, to sell Upper Class seats, which typically attract college-educated professionals with a household income of $100,000 or more, the brand is buying banner ads on news sites such as Conde Nast's Portfolio.com, print ads in Chicago newspapers, and out-of-home ads in major metropolitan areas including New York.

A Top Workplace
The Jones Group of Atlanta GA has been recognized as one of the city’s “Best Places to Work” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The newspaper, in partnership with Quantum Market Research, surveyed the metro area’s businesses and organizations. The Jones Group was listed #12 in the Top 20 Best Small Companies category. Among things that experts say make a great workplace: strong internal communication, fair compensation, a sense of teamwork, shared decision-making and goal setting, and management’s commitment to their employees’ careers. At the branding and design firm, summer hours, employee social events, special employee recognition and periodic neck and shoulder massages no doubt helped put them on the best workplaces list.

Logo Is The Key
Van Cliburn Foundation TracyLocke of Dallas TX has designed a new logo for the Van Cliburn Foundation, as the foundation embarks on a four-year span of celebrating golden anniversaries, beginning with the commemoration of pianist Van Cliburn’s win at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 and culminating in 2012 with the 50th anniversary of its first competition. While the new logo — a stylized piano in a solid circle — has a contemporary feel, it draws inspiration from the original logo, designed by Cliburn board member Sam Cantey at the organization’s inception in 1961. “The new, distinctive icon ushers the Foundation into the 21st century with a sense of timeless elegance,” said Richard Rodzinski, President of the Van Cliburn Foundation, which promotes talent in classical music through piano competitions, concerts and education programs.

Slam Dunk For 72andSunny
2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, tapped ad agency 72andSunny to launch NBA 2K9, a new basketball simulation video game. As part of the launch, the design firm conceived an online fantasy video game league in which NBA pros such as Kevin Garnett and Steve Nash own fantasy teams, and gamers are drafted to play on their behalf. The site went live last month and NBA 2K9 was released just last week. The design firm also developed print ads and digital promotion, and tv and films featuring Garnett and crew. “Our goal was to turbo-charge sales,” says Glenn Cole, co-founder and Creative Director of 72andSunny, which has offices in Los Angeles and Amsterdam.

Live Unbuttoned
Levi's A new viral marketing push by EVB for Levi’s dubbed “Unbutton Your Beast” is raising eyebrows, as the online effort lets consumers get creative with a pair of 501 jeans that unzip to reveal a talking creature. The controversial campaign, whose target audience is 18-to-24-year old males unfamiliar with 501 jeans and their button fly, is part of a global brand campaign for Levi's dubbed “Live Unbuttoned” which launched this summer. San Francisco's EVB, which has come up with online viral campaigns for OfficeMax and Kodak as well as Levi's, created a website where visitors find a large pair of jeans that asks them to create, customize and send their own “beast.” Visitors can choose from such creatures as Paul the Pincher, Sock Nasty and Saucy Sal, then add a pre-recorded message or record their own via voice-capturing technology. Not everyone appreciates the joke though, with some bloggers already calling the campaign tasteless and indecent and some pushing for a parental warning on the site.

Thinking Outside The Train
The cash-strapped Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) in New York City is wrapping the outside of the Times Square shuttle, which runs to Grand Central Station, in advertising that targets the straphangers. Not the graffiti that plagued the Big Apple’s subway cars in the eighties, but actual, revenue-raising advertising for the History Channel’s “Cities of the Underworld.” MTA Chief Elliot Sander says it’s a way to help fill the agency’s depleted coffers, and more ads are planned for stairs, turnstiles and inside train tunnels. The Authority expects to raise a million dollars in the next year from such media sales.

Saluting The Ray
Tampa Bay baseball team OAI, Inc. was enlisted to print two celebratory grand banners to capture the excitement for long-suffering Rays fans, rejoicing in the Tampa Bay baseball team’s success in the American League East. Two large vinyl banners depicting artwork — provided by the Rays — were hung at the Colonial Bank building in downtown Tampa to greet residents, employees and baseball fans bright and early Monday morning. “We are excited our team won… we wanted to do something unique, so we worked over the weekend to produce banners for the city and fans to enjoy,” said Jessica Blevins, Print Production Manager at Tampa-based OAI, the largest format printer in the Southeast.

Tavin Tapped
The American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP) has named Jerry Tavin as its 2008 Picture Professional of the Year. The award will be presented at an ASPP event in New York City in December. Tavin follows in the footsteps of previous award winners: Jane Kinne, Larry Levin, Anita Duncan, Niki Barrie, and Nancy Wolff, who all fulfilled the following criteria: being a current ASPP member who has demonstrated one or more of the following qualities — significant contributions to photography, a single outstanding achievement and long-time service to the association or its members. Executive Director, Cathy Sachs, says “If anyone has demonstrated long-time service to our industry it is Jerry. He has touched so many lives and is universally beloved by his colleagues, friends and students whom he has mentored.”
