Markzware
Markzware is a top developer of quality assurance, data conversion
and workflow solutions for the international graphic arts,
printing, publishing and digital multimedia industries. The
privately held company is based in Santa Ana CA, and has
many offerings that relate to the creative community under
the FlightCheck brand. The most recent addition, FlightCheck
Studio, is a new concept in quality control; it examines and
repairs documents while they are created. Document design specifications
are based on rules known as “Design Policies.” A Design
Policy is saved as a file, which is then distributed to any
number of designers or customers to insure all documents will
comply. All aspects of the design can be controlled including
style sheets, font usage, images and colors. Explains Patrick
Marchese, president of Markzware, “As you are going along
creating a document and go outside the parameter, Studio
warns you and presents the opportunity to quickly fix the problem.”

Mohawk Paper Mills
Mohawk
Paper Mills is a leader in the manufacture of premium printing
and imaging papers. From its flagship grade, Mohawk Superfine,
to the proprietary Inxwell products Navajo and Options, to Mohawk
Digital Papers, Mohawk papers are engineered to provide optimal
performance for sheetfed, web and digital printing. Also a leader
in environmental stewardship, Mohawk is one of the first large
scale production facilities in the U.S. to use nonpolluting
wind energy to manufacture paper. Several recycled products
have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Green
Seal. It has been an eventful year for Mohawk. On the positive
side, the company has signed a letter of intent to purchase
the Fine Papers Business from International Paper, which includes
the venerable Strathmore and Beckett gradelines. But sadly,
Thomas D. O’Connor, chairman of the family
owned mills and a respected member of the community, passed
away on November 30. He began his career at Mohawk a half century
ago, and his leadership was key to the company’s emergence
as a national leader.

Monadnock
Named for the mountain that dominates the company’s local
landscape, Monadnock was founded in 1819 and is among the oldest
continuously operating paper mills in the U.S. Grades include
Astrolite, Astrolite PC100, Dulcet and Caress. In the spirit
of the company, a recent promotion, “Specifying Quality,” documents
the continuing value of premium papers for graphic designers.
Sample comments from the piece provide evidence. Kit Hinrichs: “If
I believe a paper will have a positive impact on the effectiveness
of a piece, I will advise… accordingly. But I will present
it as a smart business decision, not only a creative one.” Jennifer
Sterling: “I always select the stock. I will give up a
number of colors or pages or a specialty process before I print
on a sheet I don’t like.” Leslie Smolan: “Paper
is a huge part of the design. It projects the tactile, sensory
parts of the message.” Jennifer Morla: “I always
make the paper selection. While a ceo doesn’t know the
cost of paper vs. photography or printing, he certainly knows
if what he holds in his hands projects the right image of the
company.” This piece, and more, are available on a newly
revamped website.
