communication design team manager, FACEBOOK
Ben Blumenfeld is a design lead at Facebook. With more than 500 million active users, Facebook is fundamentally changing the way people share and communicate with each other. Blumenfeld’s team communicates Facebook’s brand and mission through product experience, web properties, and offline channels. Prior to Facebook, Blumenfeld was a design director at Varien, which he helped build into one of the world’s leading e-commerce firms. He also worked as a designer at CBS where he designed sites for shows including CSI, Survivor, and the Late Show with David Letterman.
Where were you born, where do you live, did this effect your design style or sensibilities?
I was born in Afula, Israel and currently live in Palo Alto CA. I would say being from Israel influences my work style rather than my design style, which is largely influenced by designers I admire and my colleagues.
If you were not a designer, what would you do?
Teach or run a non-profit. I started a non profit called Choose to Laugh a few years ago with a couple of friends and it was one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my life.
What advice would you give a design student or young professional just starting out?
Solve real problems. I see so many students doing hypothetical work where they could be doing the same type of work and actually having it affect an issue, company or community. Also, build up your technical skills.
Whatever's appropriate for the job
Powerpoint, where dreams are made. Just kidding, actually TextMate.
Favorite TV Shows?
The last awesome one I read is Power of One
A Few Good Men. American Psycho. Rounders. Anything with great dialog.
Whatever's right for the mood.
Favorite Fine Artists?
Edward Hopper. Not sure how cliched that is but his work really resonates with me.

New Year’s Resolution?
Life's too short to wait until Jan. 1 to make a resolution.
