VICE PRESIDENT, USER EXPERIENCE AND DESIGN
MYSPACE.COM

Mike Macadaan is Vice President of User Experience and Design at Myspace. Macadaan was instrumental in bringing to life the new design of Myspace.com. He is also very active in the Southern California start-up community as the founder of Twiistup. Prior to joining Myspace in 2009, Macadaan served as vice president of product design for Tsavo Media. He has more than12 years experience in digital design and has worked at Disney and AOL. MySpace is, of course, a leading social entertainment destination aimed at a Gen Y audience, driving social interaction by providing a highly personalized experience around entertainment and connecting people to music, celebrities, tv movies, and games. These entertainment experiences are available through multiple platforms, including online, mobile devices, and offline events. Myspace is also the home of Myspace Music, which offers a growing catalog of freely streamable audio and video content. The company is headquartered in Beverly Hills CA and is a division of News Corporation.

Where were you born, where do you live, did this effect your design style or sensibilities?
I was born in a small town in Northern California called Livermore and now live in Los Angeles. I would say that my design has definitely been inspired by my geography. Spending most of my career around Silicon Valley and San Francisco provided me with a design sensibility that is very user centric and focused on interaction, while my time spent in Los Angeles really helped me develop a visual sensibility and a focus on aesthetics. I try to always combine those two elements in all my design work.

If you were not a designer, what would you do?
I'd probably be a blimp pilot. I was part of an advertising blimp tour in my early 20’s and it was so much fun. But to be honest I can’t see myself doing anything else. I love being a designer.

What advice would you give a design student or young professional just starting out?
Go for projects that force you to design for audiences that are nothing like you. This way you will always be challenged and have the opportunity to problem solve and create solutions for a wide audience that may have varied tastes, interests and preferences. It will also give you the opportunity to expand your creativity that will ultimately lead to unexpected possibilities.
