PARSONS THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN
It’s hard for Katherine Willmann to say exactly where she was raised. She has bounced from a childhood in northern Maine to boarding school in western Massachusetts, to liberal arts college on the West Coast, and then all the way back to the West Village of NYC, a place where she has decided to plant her feet. She is currently a fourth-year Communication Design major at Parsons, where she has fallen in love with design. Because of a passion for concept-driven work, she has settled on art direction as a focus. Willmann’s experience spans the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum to Victoria’s Secret Catalog, where her work was featured in a national ad campaign. Upon graduation with a BFA in May, Willmann is looking to work in advertising.
What made you decide to go to design school?
I am happiest when I am creative: art is the one thing about myself I have always been sure of, but it took me a little while to realize that I am a designer. I started my education at a liberal arts school where I was double majoring in studio art and psychology. I went to design school to fuse those two areas of thought.
Has it been a positive experience?
At art school I have found that design really does combine art and psychology in a powerful way. The combination of creativity with concept is what I love about design. In its raw form, great design can solve any problem by communicating a message viewers can relate and respond to. What I did not know was that this experience would become a lifestyle. It’s all consuming.
