This summer, to give designers an opportunity to become better acquainted with digital printing technology, GDUSA conducted a special "Design Your Own Cover" competition. Kodak was the natural sponsor. Entrants were asked to create a design that worked as a cover for GDUSA and integrated KODAK NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solution capabilities and possibilities. These include such high-impact visual, tactile and even added security capabilities as Dimension, Gloss and Spot Gloss, Watermarks, Clear Coating and Red Flourescing, among others.

In mid-August, the judges - Ilana Greenberg, Creative Director of GDUSA, Krista Fennessy, Marketing Communications Manager at Kodak, and Roger Ynostroza, print industry expert, writer and former Editor at Graphic Arts Monthly magazine - met at the Carlton Hotel in New York City to review nearly 120 entries.

The winning selection is featured as a tip-on cover to this edition of GDUSA (shown left). It was designed by Nichole Throndsen, Graphic Design Program Director at Minneapolis Business College in Roseville MN and a successful freelance designer. Aptly calling her piece "Creative Explosion," Nichole explores the relationship between vivid colors and simple line art in this self-portrait. She says: "I always start with pencil and paper. I love the feel of the old school wooden pencils, nothing fancy - just the basics. Then I move to a place where only I can understand; I just watch what flows from my hand onto the page. I find inspiration in simplicity and vivid colors, and I never have a shortage of creativity - it flows constantly. This is the core concept of my piece 'Creative Explosion.'" She explains that when she read about the dimensional and gloss capabilities of the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit, she knew that these enhancements would turn her analog artwork into a vibrant and tactile digitally printed cover for GDUSA.
