Green People: Lifecycles + Lifestyles

Designarchy

Designarchy

Des Moines, IA

Designarchy is a sustainable micro studio that provides graphic design services with a small ecological footprint.

Why does it matter? Explains founder Tania Kac: “As designers, it is important to understand the connections between our creations and the world around us, and to extend our eco-friendly lifestyle principles and values to the workplace. Many designers look at the client for leadership in sustainability but it is our responsibility to educate our clients. We believe eco-friendly solutions can fit any budget. We recommend to our clients the option of using recycled paper, soy inks, clean printing in addition to creating design solutions that mind the life cycle of a project. Understanding the impact of design and production choices throughout the creative process is not only imperative in ensuring a more sound and sensitive end product, but also in creating alliances with our own clients who are also sustainably-motivated. Not every project has a big budget that allows for funky solutions. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that to achieve sustainability, our mindful daily choices matter for a long-term global impact. We are not looking for perfection, just smart decisions. As designers, we need to trust in our power to lead joyfully and respectfully.”

“Offering sustainable solutions and expertise is why many businesses call on Designarchy, but more than the bottom line, it is fun and satisfying to work with like-minded businesses. We have adopted formal standards that promote the triple bottom line: people, planet and profits. The greatest reward is to support the small and medium sized business or organization with their message, image and brand while upholding environmental integrity.”

The Renewable Energy Markets Conference (REM) is the nation’s leading forum for the renewable energy community. It happens every year at a different city. We repurpose the basic layout every year but create new illustrations from monuments and famous sites for the various marketing pieces. All the printing uses eco-friendly printers, recycled paper (or recyclable substrates for banners) and soy inks. Some items, such as the sponsorship kit, are electronic files suitable for emailing or posting on the web rather than printed. Every year we review and make new choices based on budget, new resources, and ideas.
