DESIGNERS + CO-FOUNDERS, ENVATO

Husband-and-wife designers, Collis and Cyan Ta’eed, and fellow designer and long-time associate, Jun Rung, founded Envato in 2006. Envato (envato.com) is both a pioneer in creative and web development education, and a one-stop shop designers and entrepreneurs needing a range of digital assets, from stock multimedia, to web templates and even snippets of code. It’s rapidly growing ecosystem of more than 30 online storefronts, blogs and creative educational resources empowers its community of millions of designers, marketers, entrepreneurs, artists and creative enthusiasts to create, learn and make their passions pay. Envato combines cutting-edge online learning in creative and web development fields with thriving digital asset marketplaces which have transformed the definition of “stock” media in the last six years, to include not only images, video and music, but also things like web code, web templates and e-commerce templates. The Ta’eed’s philosophy of teaching, learning and exploring new opportunities continues to drive the innovation behind the ever-expanding network of brands and resources the company offers. Collis and Cyan live in Melbourne, Australia with their young son, John.

Where were you born and where do you live now? How does that affect your design sensibility?
Collis: I was born in England, and today live in Melbourne. Melbourne has a very fresh, indie, street scene and vibe which you can't help but pick up living here. It’s a city of laneways and alleys full of small funky coffee shops with a youthful, unconventional feel. It's an inspirational place to live as a designer, and I'd recommend anyone to visit and soak in the atmosphere.
Cyan: Born in Manhattan, New York, and today I live in Melbourne. Having succeeded in New York as a photographer and fashion designer, my parents have very high visual standards. From an early age they were playing an active role in my design education and informing my ideas about design.

What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or a manager?
Collis: I love observing design around me, whether advertising or signage, product or industrial design. Constantly observing and informing your intuition helps make creativity happen. As for weaknesses, it’s definitely trends. I love me a good design trend! I know I shouldn’t, but I get inspired by fashions and want to do my own take on them – sometimes irrespective of the brief!
Cyan: My first boss in my career as a designer realized early on that I was a better project manager than designer. Organization is one of my greatest assets. My biggest weakness was that I don’t have the patience to fiddle around for hours making something perfect – I get frustrated easily.
