His work has received numerous awards by organizations including AAF-Dayton, the District Five Advertising Federation, the AIGA, the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts, Admissions Marketing Report, and GDUSA magazine. In 2011, Matthew received a Dayton Business Journal “Forty Under 40” award, which honors the region’s up-and-coming leaders, and was also named Educator of the Year by AAF-Dayton in 2009 and 2012.

Where were you born and where do you live now? How does that affect your design sensibility?
I was born in Fairborn OH, a suburb of Dayton, and still live in the area. Dayton actually has a strong design community. I’m lucky to teach, work with, and engage with a wide variety of very talented creatives who affect my design sense. I’m proud to be a part of such a talented group of people.

Who would you say is the most influential graphic designer of the past 50 years? How have they influenced your design?
Obviously designers like Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Paul Rand and Stefan Sagmeister. I would also include Robynne Raye and Mike Strassburger of Modern Dog. I saw them speak while in college and knew immediately afterward that I wanted to be a graphic designer. They showed how much fun creativity and design could be.

What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or design manager?
One of my greatest strengths is concepting and generating ideas. I love the creative process. A weakness is definitely the ability to find time to implement all those ideas.
