Ogee is an all-natural skincare brand, founded by a collection of leaders in the fashion and beauty industry looking to create a brand that would connect the worlds of luxury and organic. Seeking the most effective, all-natural anti-aging alternatives, Ogee’s founders searched the world for the newest discoveries in naturally derived ingredients, such as cutting-edge Edelweiss Flower Plant Stem Cells and hero ingredient, certified organic Golden Jojoba Oil.
The brand is committed to sustainable and eco-friendly practices and adheres to organic and sustainable principals through its commitment to ethical and fair business practices. Ogee obtained organic certification by NSF, a strict, internationally recognized standard specifically designed for personal care products, and uses only the highest quality natural and organic ingredients to retain the maximum level of antioxidants, polyphenols and micronutrients in every bottle. Each product is blended, filled, certified and packaged in the United States using recycled packaging.
When Ogee redesigned its packaging in 2018, the paper selection was an important part of the design process. Alex Stark, Co-Founder & COO said, “The previous packaging was a recycled paper, and though we intended to stay with an eco-friendly paper, we also wanted a sustainable source.” Stark enlisted the help of George Oliver of Twinsburg OH-based Oliver Printing, to research the perfect paperboard. “We told George we need a higher quality, more luxurious, white box. Our previous box was a brown recycled paperboard so we were having to print two to three hits of white on it, and we just weren’t able to get the white we wanted. George suggested Neenah® Folding Board, Bright White. It had the naturally white shade we were looking for, and it also met all of our sustainability requirements,” said Stark.
When it came to the graphic design on the package, Stark said they eliminated as much copy as possible, using the white space to direct the focus to the hand drawn illustration and highlight the beauty of the paper. “Everything we make is a luxury, certified organic product, and we wanted the packaging to tell that story to the customer who picks it up off the shelf. The goal was to make a really beautiful package that was clean and crisp, one that visually indicates to the customer that this is a clean, organic product, while at the same time keeping that luxury look and feel. That’s what we liked about the Neenah paper that we used for the cartons, it’s a really beautiful white color, the Eggshell finish has a wonderful organic feel, and its printability exceeded our expectations,” said Stark.
The package design features a gold foil stamp with a registered emboss, metallic gray type and four color printing. “We were impressed with how the gold foil looked, the embossing and the printed colors looked on it, everything seemed to contrast with the paper really nicely, making it look crisp, especially in photography,” Stark said. “One important discovery we made early on is if you do a lot of online sales you have to consider photography differently than retail stores would — you have to consider the paper. It’s crucial that we are able to show the beauty of our products and packaging in our photography, as that is a big part of what guides our new to brand online customers in the purchasing decision. If your package is produced with a coated or a gloss paper you can end up fighting the refelction of the paper in the photography, making it difficult to find the exact angle without losing the text or the design.”
The Ogee Tinted Lip Oils, are eight different shades of a silky, solid blend of organic cold-pressed jojoba oil and butters that moisturize and nourish, with a conditioning layer of beauty-enhancing, buildable natural color. Each shade is named for a flower; azalea, begonia, camella, dahlia, gardenia, linnea, magnolia, zinnia. The packaging uses hand drawn flowers, each printed to match the shade of the lip oil. “George did a great job of matching all eight shades on the boxes. That was an important aspect to this design because we need our to packaging to deliver what our customers are expecting,” said Stark.
It was key to us that the paper we used for our packaging was responsibly sourced, FSC certified and easily recyclable. The challenge was to find the right balance of an environmentally friendly package without sacrificing the look and feel of the package. Neenah® Folding Board provided the right solution,” said Stark.
