AIGA’s New York chapter is hosting a panel discussion on how Modernism transformed American graphic design, organized around a new book by Steven Heller and Greg D’Onofrio entitled The Moderns: Midcentury American Graphic Design. The work is a comprehensive survey of this phenomenon – showcasing 63 graphic designers – many of whom were emigres who brought the gospel of Modernism to America from its sources in Europe and others who were homegrown talents who encountered Modernism in schools and studios. They formed a multigenerational community, and like Modernism itself, had varying methods yet were bound by governing principles of function, clarity, and simplicity. The event and a related book signing is set for Monday November 20 at Parsons School of Design, and includes a talk by the authors as well as a panel with several key creatives in the movement including legends Tom Geismar, George Lois and Rudi Wolff. The publisher is Abrams Book and the introduction is by Debbie Millman.
