Athletics Love Letter To New York City Soccer Scene

Malcolm Buick of brand studio Athletics has a passion project, &friends, a digital archive that documents and celebrates the teeming underground and overground soccer scene in New York City.

Malcolm Buick is Executive Creative Director and Partner at brand studio Athletics, as well as a self-described “Scotsman living in NYC.” He has worked on the development of some of US Soccer’s leading brands including Major League Soccer, MLS Go, Seattle Sounders FC, Nashville SC, and United Soccer League’s brand structure.

A passion project for Malcolm is &friends, a digital archive that documents and celebrates the teeming underground and overground soccer scene in New York City. Teams covered include: Bowery Football Club, Brooklyn Lager FC, Chinatown Soccer Club, Exceptional Woman FC, ManChestHair United, and many other locals. The vision/branding and design has all been created by Athletics.

He explains:

“For me, this project starts a long way from New York.  I grew up in Arbroath, a small town on the east coast of Scotland, where football was less about the football and more about your pals. We’d play anywhere we could find a patch of grass. Jumpers for goalposts. A battered ball. Usually a sign saying “‘No Ball Games” that immediately became the target. The game was always there, but what stayed with me was the friendship. The people. The sense of belonging.

Years later, moving from Scotland to London and eventually New York, football became a way of finding that feeling again. Every city has its own version of the game, but the thread is always the same: people coming together around a ball. Friendships forming. Communities taking shape.
.
.
That’s really where &friends comes from. It’s a love letter to the game as it’s played away from the spotlight. The leagues, clubs, pickup games, rivalries, characters and communities that make New York one of the great football cities in the world. Not because of the stadiums or the headlines, but because of the thousands of people playing every day across parks, pitches, schoolyards and cages throughout the five boroughs. We’re building &friends as a living archive to celebrate that culture. To document it, to shine a light on the people who make the game what it is.
.
.
“Because if football (now soccer : ) has taught me anything, from Arbroath to New York, it’s that the game is really just an excuse to find your people. And New York is full of them.”
