Barbie and Ken As Cultural Figures
Mattel introduces LeBron James as the first doll in their Kenbassadors line celebrating influential Ken figures who are creating positive change and contributing to a better world for all. Adults have become the fastest-growing group in the toy market, and this collector’s edition reflects the shift in how Barbie and Ken are being positioned: as cultural figures as much as childhood staples.
Defying the odds, LeBron emerged from the hardness of inner-city life to become a basketball legend, author, activist, and philanthropist. He says: “As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what’s possible through hard work and dedication. That’s why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is such an honor. It’s an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids they they, too, can achieve greatness.”
James’ doll comes decked out in custom streetwear he helped design himself. Dressed in a varsity jacket decorated with patches that reference his life and legacy — like an Ohio nod, his jersey number, and the ‘We Are Family’ logo of the LeBron James Family Foundation — the doll also sports an ‘I Promise’ wristband and accessories from brands like Nike and Beats.
A portion of the collaboration benefits his foundation, which provides support services in Akron OH for education, housing, health, and job training. As part of the release, Mattel is also donating up to 5,000 of James’ children’s book I Am More Than to Save the Children when the doll is purchased through Target between April 14 and 19.
