Divine Details: AIGA Pop Up Store

Divine Details, an exhibit & store in collaboration with AIGA, will feature 33 designers from around the world that have made beautiful, functional products that transcend the ordinary. Unlike most pop-up stores during the holiday season, Divine Details isn’t a pure consumerist endeavor. Instead, it turns the holiday shopping rush into a cultural experience. Divine Details connects the writing, arts, design, and food community with consumers all at once.

Each product is functional, beautifully-designed, extraordinary at some level and affordable. Examples include a Bluetooth wireless speaker from Grain Audio and magnetic wooden blocks produced in Honduras by Tegu.

Every product becomes an art piece because of a story displayed on an approximately 7-foot wall behind it. This story explains the design or concept behind the product and is produced by an acclaimed writer. Writers include Garnette Cadogan who writes for the New Yorker and The Rolling Stone;  beloved food & HuffPo blogger Cathy Erway; and playwright Bekah Brunstetter, writer of CUTIE AND BEAR and The Oregon Trail.

In addition to daily store hours, the exhibition will also host a series of ticketed events entitled “Further Details” focusing on the collaborative relationships between design, food, music, and story. Speakers will include some the most talented and respected people in those fields. For example, Further Details Food will feature a full 4-course meal with Cathy Erway, The Pixie and the Scout and others.

Divine Details is the brainchild of Tina Chang and Esther Mun who own Little Fury, an independent design studio and Brian Watkins head writer and creative editor for Little Fury’s Divine Details who is also a playwright. His recent play ‘High Plains,’ recently completed its critically acclaimed UK premiere with Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The exhibit and store is the first of its kind and will be held at the AIGA gallery space (164 Fifth Avenue) in the heart of the Flatiron district from November 2nd – December 28th 2013.
