BMW M Steers To Classic Logo

For the 50th anniversary of the M brand, which started as BMW Motorsport, BMW reverses to a classic logo for select models. The emblem puts three specific semicircles in blue, violet, and red around the BMW roundel to represent how the automaker is connected to racing.

Last year BMW revealed a new logo, a flat and minimal reworking of its previously 3D emblem. But now, the brand reports that its M division cars will feature a racing logo from its past – as well as retro paint jobs – to mark the Motorsport division’s 50th anniversary. The new emblem – inspired by the classic BMW Motorsport logo – will replace the standard blue and white roundel on the vehicle’s front and rear and on the wheel hubs. The BMW Motorsport logo surrounds the brand’s standard logo with blue, violet, and red semicircle lines.

BMW explains that the ‘M’ logo, designed in 1972, features a detailed color scheme: “Blue stands for BMW, red for motorsport and violet for the unique combination of the two.” As well as the old logo, BMW is also reviving ‘50s BMW M paint finishes: these include Dakar Yellow, Fire Orange, Daytona Violet, Macao Blue, Imola Red, and Frozen Marina Bay Blue.
