Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv has created the visual identity for the upcoming Leonard Bernstein Centennial in 2018. The symbol is a combination of a bold red “B” and a specially drawn G-clef. It seeks to create a close association between the Bernstein name and the concept of music for new generations of audiences who may not be as familiar with his legacy.

The identity is rolling out this Spring by the Leonard Bernstein Office, and Centennial celebrations kicked off with a private launch event featuring Alec Baldwin and Whoopi Goldberg. Composer of music for West Side Story, Wonderful Town, Peter Pan, On the Town and On the Waterfront, as well as many symphonic and chamber works, Bernstein was a towering figure in culture high and low during the 20th century. Music Director and conductor for the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein pioneered the Young People’s Concerts series, which brought symphonies to the masses via CBS television and changed the way Americans thought about classical music.
