BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY

Hi! I’m a Brigham Young University graphic design student from Kansas City, Missouri. I love to laugh, learn new things, make fun stuff, and have a grand old time. For me, curiosity is a big part of the human experience. Celebrating differences and exploring the creative world are essential. My family, friends, and faith help me stay grounded. I grew up in an art-friendly home and I spent much of my time strolling through galleries and museums or coming up with my own creations. I learn best when I have an interesting problem to solve, and I am happiest when I am with the people I love.

WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSPIRED?

I often feel inspired when I hear a problem statement, or I start a new project. When someone presents me with a design challenge my brain lights up and I start making connections and coming up with new ideas.

WHAT AREA OR AREAS OF DESIGN ARE YOU HOPING TO WORK IN OR SPECIALIZE IN?

I am still exploring the different design areas but branding, packaging, and publication covers have been my favorite areas to work on so far. As of now, I am more drawn to working with graphics and patterns than with type and interaction design.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOUR TIME IN DESIGN SCHOOL HAS TAUGHT YOU THAT YOU DIDN’T EXPECT?

Design school has taught me how to design collaboratively and get help and feedback from my classmates. I expected to focus a lot on my own work and projects but I have grown a lot by helping my classmates with their work and receiving help for my own.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO IN YOUR FIELD?

I look up to people who have personally influenced me in my growth as a designer. Both my parents (Julie and David Babcock) have worked in the graphic design field in a variety of disciplines and showed me that graphic design provides many opportunities to be creative in different ways..

WHAT ARE YOU READING/LISTENING TO/WATCHING?

I love stories and storytelling and I spend a lot of time thinking about the narrative qualities of the media I consume (what makes an interesting or effective story and what doesn’t). I like to read webcomics and watch weird movies (recently: Yellow Submarine and old Gene Wilder films). I’m almost always listening to funky, punchy music (mostly K-pop) and spending too much time swimming through the land of Instagram reels.
