LIAM FISHER

Liam Fisher is a junior at Susquehanna University pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design. Though constantly doodling when he was younger, he didn’t fully reconnect with art until his junior and senior years of high school, when he joined his school’s news program. Creating graphics and visual elements for the broadcast helped him rediscover his creative side and sparked a genuine interest in design. Since beginning college, that passion has continued to grow as he explores new techniques, develops his visual style, and gains a deeper understanding of design as both a craft and a form of communication. Outside of his academic work, Liam enjoys writing characters and stories for Dungeons & Dragons, using narrative creativity as another outlet for his imagination. He also relaxes by playing games with friends, finding balance between his studies and hobbies.
In high school I was in a team that produced the student news program, and my teacher at the time Mr. Sponagle allowed me to stretch my legs creatively, which led me to creating thumbnails, logos, and other graphics for the show. This led to me discovering my passion for design.
As unorthodox as it might be, my father has been a huge creative influence. He is an artist, but not a designer. I often find myself bouncing my ideas off of him to get his perspective, and even though we don’t always agree that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
I’d have to pick my recent coffee packaging project. I took a risk with creating a unique package in the shape of a skull, having to create the dieline myself and prototype it until I achieved the result I wanted. It paid off in the end more than I expected at the start of the project.
Good design has an identity which effectively communicates the message intended by the creator in a manner that is effective and capable of keeping your attention and interest visually, celebrating its unique style or ideas.
I’m more concerned with the trend of simplifying. A lot of really fun and unique logos and other designs have been reduced in ways that look clean but remove part of their personality. I am not saying simple is bad, but over-simplification is something I’d be concerned about.
