Jolt of Color Marks ‘Fallout’ Poster House Exhibition

‘Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace’ is now showing at Poster House New York. Exhibition design was executed by Kudos Design Collaboratory and KASA Collective; John Kudos says that the idea is to create “immersion through colors” and embrace the deeply emotional nature of the subject.

Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace is a new exhibition at Poster House New York open through September 7. Curated by Angelina Lippert and Tim Medland, the exhibition is described as chronicling “the global development of the nuclear industry, for peaceful and offensive means, examining posters that both promoted and protested its use throughout the second half of the 20th century. It features the entire General Dynamics series, long heralded as one of the finest examples of corporate propaganda ever created, as well as over 60 other posters criticizing the proliferation of nuclear technology.”

John Kudos (shown above), who along with KASA Collective partner Robert de Saint Phalle had recently designed the popular Made in Japan exhibit at Poster House, explained the thinking and the inspiration behind the approach to Steven Heller of The Daily Heller:

“Because nothing about this exhibition is subtle, we decided to adopt the powerful color graphics from Erik Nitsche’s General Dynamics/Atoms for Peace poster (1955). We wanted to create a sense of immersion through colors. Combined with our preference to create a permeable visitor flow, I think the color immersion approach creates this notion of being pulled in from whichever path you take…

“When we started to visualize our 2D ideas for Fallout on an isometric rendering of the gallery, we saw how the simplicity of scaling up Nitsche’s linear and directional design motifs created a very immersive spatial experience. Instead of approaching the exhibition design with an academic and analytical eye, we decided to embrace the jolt, emotional and amplified approach. In the end, we feel this approach is more fitting given the powerful impacts these posters have on their own.”

Award-winning KUDOS Design Collaboratory is a “purpose-driven design agency converging at the intersection of technology, business and art.” KASA Collective specializes in experience design for museums and spaces.
