THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

Kathryn is a fourth-year student at The Ohio State University, majoring in Visual Communication Design and minoring in Film Studies.  Her relentless appreciation for the visual arts inspires her approach to design as both a practice and a product.  Kathryn is especially interested in time-based media—including animation, motion design, film and video production, and the like.  She prides herself on her attention to detail, and is enthusiastic about any opportunity to grow as a creator and a collaborator.  When she is not working, she can be found experimenting in the kitchen, enjoying time with her nephews and niece, or indulging in movies and shows of all kinds.

What makes you feel inspired?

I have such a reverence for fellow creators.  Whether I am spending a day in the studio with my peers, listening to an especially well-produced podcast, or watching a movie by my favorite director—simply experiencing creativity in action is enough to inspire me to put forth some of my own.

What area(s) of design are you hoping to specialize in?

I am most interested in time-based media—animation, motion design, film and video production, and the like.

What is one thing that design school has taught you that you did not expect?

I am particularly taken by the emphasis on process.  The notion that a project need not ever be totally “finished,” but instead subject to constant evolution, is motivating and creatively liberating.

Who is someone that you look up to in your field?

As a young designer, I fell in love with the work of April Greiman.  The stunning vibrancy and wondrously eclectic juxtaposition of imagery on display in her pieces inspires much of my own work to this day.

What are you reading / listening to / watching?

I am currently rewatching both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.  I have also been listening to Glass Animals, as well as the podcasts SmartLess (Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, Will Arnett) and The End of the World w/ Josh Clark.
