COE Designs Collateral While Print Guidelines Evolve

Fresh May 6, 2019May 9, 2019 Ilana Greenberg

The Scripps Research Institute has continually teamed with COE Design on print and digital projects ranging from various research and recruitment videos for its world-class graduate program, as well as collateral for the program and graduation elements. The institute was recently given a makeover that helped refine its core mission as well as simplifying its name to Scripps Research. The  graduate department, an important segment of Scripps Research, asked COE Design to create new graduate program literature that would showcase the new rebrand. But while the goal was to design collateral to reinforce the brand guidelines, the early work was done simultaneously with the new brands rollout for the website, so there were no guidelines yet for print. This became a collaborative team effort both in flexibility and intuitive thinking. In the end, COE Design used the new brand elements — infinity loop, spectrum bar, color palette, tag lines, and fonts that were in place — but left enough flexibility to change as print rules evolved.

COE Design started by developing a series of program brochures and a custom die-cut folder. The client wanted to use the new brand, but also have a unique look for the Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences. A new curved die-cut folder included an optional clear pocket for a custom flash drive and allowed the pocket curves to showcase the new brochures. The new brand assets were used to unite the family look across the various printed pieces, and are now being adapted across the program’s collateral including thank you cards, letterhead templates, imprint shells, bumper stickers, and banners.
