The iconic Batman logo has been redesigned for the first time since 2011. The latest design, debuting in the 125th issue of the Batman comic this summer, has been developed by artist Jorge Jiménez, who has recently taken over as the main comic artist for the series. The bat shape previously sat behind the Batman wordmark, but is now captured within the typeface.
Batman began in 1939 as a Sunday newspaper comic and the original logo, shown here, was simple. It has since had at least two dozen iterations for comic books, television and movies.
New head writer for the Batman series Chip Zdarsky says of Jimenez: “He’s a superstar! Not just as an artist, but as a person! He’s really delightful and excited about the character and the direction we’re going in, which is great. We talked about going darker with the book and he’s been all aboard, with some really stunning pages that showcase the tone.”
