Over 200 recipes from both famous and mom and pop East Village chefs, community members, artists, celebrities and local grandmas will appear in an old fashioned, spiral-bound community cookbook entirely benefiting Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish and Soup Kitchen. Spearheaded by chef and author Will Horowitz, this inspiring project was dreamt up during COVID at the East Village’s Tompkins Square Dog Park, where three friends: Pastor Will Kroeze of Trinity Parish, local schoolteacher Dan Hyatt, and Horowitz found solace in their neighborhood community through the nationwide lockdown. Quickly bonding over a mutual love for food, the three conceived an idea for an old-fashioned community cookbook whose proceeds would benefit the church’s soup kitchen, helping it repair its 50-year-old kitchen that feeds hundreds of people a day, and which refused to close during the pandemic.
Shortly after the project was born, East Village branding agency Champions Design onboarded to bring the book to life. Donating over a year of their time, Champions conceptualized the vintage-y comb-bound cookbook design reminiscent of the past. They worked on more than 200 spot illustrations, countless pieces of East Village ephemera, 97 mock ads for local businesses, and a poster-size hand drawn map of the East Village reflecting the location of each recipe (and ultimately illustrating the neighborhood’s relationship to cuisine).
