Sophia Collins is a junior at Baylor University from Phoenix, Arizona, pursuing a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design. Soph has always been passionate about art, with a love for design, oil painting, illustration, crochet, and a newfound love for relief printmaking. They are always looking for unique ways to push typography and ways to mix fine art with design. Soph hopes to soon make and print as many zines as possible and learn bookbinding (and an ever-growing list of other art mediums.) Soph’s biggest goal is to own a risograph printer one day and a house with a conservatory to stash a million plants.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSPIRED?
A lot of things! My friends and the wonderful art they make, animation in movies and TV, videos I watch on YouTube, any abstract impressionist paintings, old art books, creative zines from artists/designers I follow on Instagram, anything mixed media, illustration, the Sonoran Desert, my friends, and their art again, and much more all inspire me in some way visually or conceptually.
WHAT IS SOMETHING DESIGN SCHOOL HAS TAUGHT YOU THAT YOU DID NOT EXPECT?
I’ve discovered tendencies to hoard interesting textures and things I can scan. The notes app on my phone is full of random scans of things I thought were cool. I’ve also learned how to maximize the amount of nutrition I can get from whatever’s left over in my fridge or pantry when I haven’t been to the store in a while.
WHO IS SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO IN YOUR FIELD? EITHER TODAY OR HISTORICALLY?
I follow a lot of unique designers/artists online, like Kel Lauren, Emma Bers, Noah Neal, Garrett Davis, Omer Mosseri, and so many more. I’m obsessed with all their work. I also love the work of Jamie Reid and his impact on punk art/design.
WHAT ARE YOU READING, LISTENING TO, WATCHING?
Currently, I’m reading The White Album by Joan Didion and watching Midnight Mass with my best friend.
