Super Bowl: Sunset or Bloody Sunday?

NBC’s logo for Super Bowl LVI has fans noticing that the bright red trees look a lot like dripping blood, not the shadow of palm trees in the sunset as intended.

The logo for this year’s Super Bowl LVI, to be held in Los Angeles and broadcast by NBC, was revealed a year ago but, with the game taking place soon, it is currently appearing on more screens. The logo prominently displays the Lombardi Trophy and incorporates palm trees and colors that reflect a Southern California sunset inside the Roman numerals, bringing local flavor to an otherwise templated design that has been used since Super Bowl XLV in 2011.

But fans have begun commenting that something looks off about the logo — the red sunset, combined with the shape of the palm tree silhouettes makes it look like the logo is dripping blood. People took to social media to express their confusion and thoughts on the logo: “So, am I the only person wondering why this year’s Super Bowl logo has blood spatter on it?,” one Twitter user wrote. Another fan said the logo looked like a promotion for “a cheesy 80s horror movie.” And a local Fox station leads with “The Super Bowl Logo Is Freaking People Out.”

You be the judge. Super Bowl LVI will be played at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, February 13.
