To mark International Artists Day in late October, Lawn Love compared the 200 biggest US cities to rank 2022’s Most Artsy Cities in America. The survey looks for cities with plenty of art museums, galleries, theaters, and music venues to visit. It also considered art classes and schools, opera houses, movie lover-friendliness, recording studios, and supply shops, among 22 total metrics.
According to results, the Golden City brings home the gold. San Francisco has the most art museums, theaters, music venues, cultural centers, art supply stores, and music shops per square mile out of all the cities in the ranking.
Miami comes in at No. 2. It has the most art fairs, galleries, dealers, and consultants per 100,000 residents. It is also second in art museums, theaters, music venues, art space rentals, art supplies stores, and music shops per square mile.
New York City places third, paced by the most universities with visual and performing arts programs, as well as being the best city for movie lovers. Additionally, New York has a high number of art museums, music venues, opera houses, art installations, and art fairs.
Rounding out the top ten: Seattle, Boston, Washington DC, Minneapolis, Pasadena, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
The survey notest that just because a city is small-ish doesn’t mean it lacks art. Minneapolis (7) had high scores across the board. Providence (11) and Cincinnati (13) each stand out for their music venues and art tours. However, small cities – such as Laredo, Kansas City KS, and Warren MI, West Valley City UT – fared poorly landing in the bottom of the rankings.
