Jan Sabach Builds Identity For Baba Settlement

Jan Sabach has completed the identity for a unique functionalist estate of 33 buildings  in Prague that is vying for European Heritage Label recognition. The Baba settlement is one of Werkbund’s six experimental settlements in Europe. The Werkbund was an association of artists, architects, designers, and industrialists, established in 1907, that became an important element in the development of modern architecture and industrial design, particularly in the later creation of the Bauhaus school.

The whole identity system is based on a square. The custom letterforms are inspired by the buildings themselves as well as Piet Zwart’s typography and the letters are organized in a chessboard-like manner as a nod to the original zoning plan designed by the Czech architect Pavel Janák. Color palette is simple, utilitarian, and bold.
