Ashland Damron

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

Heading into college, Ashland was torn between going to art school or studying engineering. She decided to learn a little of each by majoring in visual communication design with an interest in emerging technology. Soon enough, she will be an alumnus of THE Ohio State University and forced to step into reality. Virtual and augmented, that is. When she is not in class or on the clock, she is attempting to tame the beast that is her young puppy. She is also currently loving her new role of being an auntie!

What makes you feel inspired?

I feel the most inspired when I am experimenting with new technology in my design. It feels like there are limitless opportunities when something is still so unexplored.

What area or areas of design are you hoping to work in or specialize in?

I will be working in the realm of emerging technology, specifically augmented reality.

What is one thing that design school has taught you that you did not expect?

Confidence without comparison– learning that my own work is not valued based on how it compares to others.

Who is someone you look up to in your field? Either today or historically?

I look up to Nicole Riemer, the creative director I have been interning under for the last year. I admire the way she creates projects that push the boundaries of reality. Using emerging technology in ways it has never been used before.

What are you reading, listening to, watching?

Currently, I am reading The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Almost always, I am listening to Taylor Swift or Harry Styles.
