JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
Lance McCullah is a Graphic Design student at James Madison University. During his undergraduate career he has found opportunities to pursue his passion for design in and out of the classroom. Lance leads a design team of seven students for an on campus creative agency, has held two design internships from summer continuing throughout the school year, is president of JMU’s AIGA chapter, and continues to go the extra mile for school and freelance projects that come his way. He believes the power of design and creativity gives us the ability to look at issues humans face every day with a fresh perspective. This past year, he took printmaking classes which sparked an interest in screen printing. This experience has led him to a newfound appreciation for illustration and the print medium. Lance’s work explores the intersection of culture and technology, using design as a vehicle for innovation.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSPIRED?
My inspiration comes from thinking, since good design is almost always the result of good thinking. Finding that big idea, discovering a new approach, looking for those in the right places, all starts with good thinking.
WHAT AREA OR AREAS OF DESIGN ARE YOU HOPING TO WORK IN OR SPECIALIZE IN?
Branding has brought so much more meaning for me as to what designers can accomplish and are capable of. Forging an emotional connection with audiences is an interesting world to explore that has no limits on creativity
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT DESIGN SCHOOL HAS TAUGHT YOU THAT YOU DID NOT EXPECT?
My appreciation for all non-design classes. Art history and studio art classes particularly were able to help my analytical understanding of art and explain why an image looks the way it does. Also, I just love working with my hands instead of a mouse when I can.
