Miriam Listiak

TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY

Miriam Listiak (she/her) is a graduating senior in the Texas State Communication Design program who is obsessed with problem solving and specializes in design research, copy writing, and conceptual strategies. She has had the opportunity to participate in a few design workshops—including a poster design competition and a design sprint with 3 Day Startup based in Austin, Tx—where she gained skills in team synergy, conceptual strategies, design sprinting, and designing in a studio environment. In her free time, Miriam enjoys the outdoors, watching movies, painting, and creating books and print art.

WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSPIRED?

I have been extremely blessed to have traveled all over the world. I am inspired by being immersed in a new culture where I can experience how people interact similarly and differently to my own culture and how those interactions result in problem solving.

WHAT AREA OR AREAS OF DESIGN ARE YOU HOPING TO WORK IN OR SPECIALIZE IN?

I believe that every system that exists is designed. That being said, I am looking to put my skills to use wherever I am able to design more efficient, user-friendly systems for the greater good of the world.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT DESIGN SCHOOL HAS TAUGHT YOU THAT YOU DID NOT EXPECT?

Growing up in a household of science and engineering brains, I was nervous about going into design as I am also more inclined to the logic of science and math. However, I came to find that, yes, design is dominantly a visual and creative field, but it also requires a logical and analytic brain to research and solve problems.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO IN YOUR FIELD? EITHER TODAY OR HISTORICALLY?

A designer I really look up to is Holly Sterling. Not only is she an accomplished Art Director but also an excellent educator at Texas State.

WHAT ARE YOU READING/LISTENING TO/WATCHING?

I’m currently reading Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell. I enjoy watching movies in my free time and am currently rewatching the Harry Potter series. My favorite podcast at the moment is Design Better with Aaron Walter and Elijah Woolery of DesignBetter.Co.
