Samantha Cubberley

SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY

My name is Samantha Cubberley, and I am a sophomore at Susquehanna University, pursuing a BFA degree in Graphic Design. Ever since I was little, I loved to draw, but it wasn’t until my Senior year of high school that I realized that I wanted to work in a creative field. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I’ve had the opportunity to work on two different commission projects over the last semester, an album cover for Indie artist Ash the Ghost, as well as a logo for an alpine flight service called Aplen Go. When I’m not in the design lab, I enjoy reading, spending time with friends and family, and working on personal projects whenever I get the chance.

WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSPIRED?

I like to look at vinyl record jackets at my local record shop, walk around bookstores, and visit art museums whenever I get the chance. Seeing work on display provides me with an opportunity to reflect on the development and diversity of art over the years.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT DESIGN SCHOOL HAS TAUGHT YOU THAT YOU DID NOT EXPECT?

As a sophomore I have not had the full experience in my design program yet, but I know that I will learn many valuable lessons down the road. I like to take every day like a learning experience.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO IN YOUR FIELD?

Two designers that I look up to in my field are Annie Atkins and Jon Contino. I think that they both demonstrate an interesting balance between handmade design and digital techniques, which I hope to achieve in my own work someday.
