HOW Design Live Embraces Convergence of Design and Marketing

2018! And just like that it’s another New Year!

Most of us think about our goals a bit more this time of year AND reflect on what we can do to change and improve our lives and positively impact our “circle” – the people around us. One of our primary goals for the HOW Design Live team is to be forward thinkers – to try to stay ahead of the industry so we can do everything possible to help designers navigate their changing environment.

An obvious trend is that the convergence of design and marketing is accelerating. With that, we’ve seen more marketing professionals attending HOW Design Live and our design attendees have shown stronger interest in sessions that address the intersection of design and marketing. Staying true to our goal of looking toward the future of design and marketing and how we can help designers and marketers thrive in their roles, we’re super excited to partner with the American Marketing Association (AMA) in launching HOW Marketing Live April 30-May 1, 2018. Our intent is to strengthen the collaboration between marketers and designers because the business challenges of today – and tomorrow – depend on it. We live in a fast-paced world. Customers don’t wait. They expect brands and organizations to be ready to help them wherever and whenever they need it. The use of technology and artificial intelligence are now norms in the realms of customer experience, marketing, and R&D. And the wealth of data makes it possible to evaluate a brand’s every move.

Yet none of the technology matters if marketing and design aren’t moving in the same direction. “Together, designers and marketers form the formidable team required to forge new pathways for brands and customers. The 1950s saw a powerful art director and copywriter team revolutionize advertising, and now we are ushering in a new era with AI that is changing everything – how we communicate, inspire, and work together. The HOW Design Live and American Marketing Association partnership ignites this combined force, showing designers and marketers how to combine their strengths in design thinking and strategy to define our future.”

More creative work is being brought in-house. In fact nearly 60% of all creatives work in-house. What are these in-house designers like many of you seeing? That the practice of design has changed. It’s more strategic, more results-oriented, more collaborative. It’s more like marketing. The team at HOW Design Live is here to help you be successful as you live in this intersection of design and marketing. When you attend HOW Marketing Live you’ll sit in sessions that will help you gain an understanding of how strategy drives key marketing decisions; you’ll dive into metrics, ROI, and the use of data to optimize creative and drive results; you’ll explore the use of marketing automation, social media, SEO, paid strategies, and content marketing to deliver integrated campaigns to list just a few. Equally as important for our in-house designers are sessions such as building empathy for each other’s roles and recognizing the value that designers and marketers each bring to the board room; and learning strategies for communicating and collaborating effectively with each other in an agile world. These skill sets are key because it’s not just about what we know but how we communicate it with our team.
